Initiatives Southport Sharks has undertaken to build a sustainable business in the long-term.

Southport Sharks is committed to its Corporate Social Responsibility and strives to achieve a cleaner environment, be socially conscious and to conduct ourselves in an ethical manner. The following are some examples of initiatives undertaken:

Local support

  • Sourcing products from high-quality, certified organic local producers. We work with certified organic local producers including, Fig Tree Organic Farm, Paul Graham’s Organic Farm and Sunforest Organic Farm.
  • Mantra at Sharks Accessibility Room. Inclusivity is important and we are proud to offer two accessibility room types specifically designed for guests with additional access needs and space.

Environmental

  • Un-serviced rates option for guests. Reduction in amenities, water and linen. With a $1 donation for every unserviced booking made going to the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation.
  • In-room control of air conditioning unit. Introduced to allow guests to control their own room temperature.
  • Air conditioning vents cleaned weekly. Result saw an increased efficiency, the units were working at a 30% rate
  • Reusable Keep Cups. Box Coffee Co introduced branded reusable Keep Cups in 2018 offering two sizes. These are also made available for Mantra at Sharks guests to purchase, through the Fitness Centre and within Sharks Events Centre guest packages.
  • Eco Straws. Aviary Rooftop Bar introduced the use of Hay Straws.
  • Reusable bags. Sharks Events Centre offers reusable bags for delegates, rather than a plastic bag to carry.

Electricity

  • Building Management System (BMS). To achieve a reduction in electrical consumption & carbon dioxide. February 2019, stage 1 was installed in the Events Centre & Fitness Centre to control the air conditioning systems, followed by the rest of Southport Sharks club in January 2020.
  • Upgrade of lights to LED. Replacement of old light technology to LED to provide energy efficiencies.

Water

  • Recycled water to irrigate the main oval and junior ovals. Installed in 2002 and is in constant review for efficiency.
  • Bore water to irrigate Village Green and other gardens around the club. The bore water access was installed in 2002 and with recent dry weather, there is a concerted effort to rejuvenate this use.
  • Rainwater tanks to irrigate gardens around Mantra at Sharks hotel. Installed in 2018

Air Conditioning

  • Replacement of old air conditioning systems (an ongoing process). The Board and Management team are committed to the staged process of air conditioning upgrades to more energy-efficient air conditioning system, that are using environmentally friendly refrigerants.
