ABOUT THE FOOTBALL CLUB

The Southport Australian Football Club was established in 1961.  In our first year of existence, we won the GCAFL Premiership, which was to be the first of many.  As a result of our on-field success, we were promoted to the QAFL in 1983, and became the Southport Sharks due to another team of the same name. Our triumph continued in the QAFL as we again won the Premiership in our first year in the competition.

Keen to escape the tiny confines of Owen Park, in 1989 the club moved to it’s current location of Fankhauser Reserve, which is now part of Sharks’ multi-functional sport, leisure and entertainment precinct.  In aligning with our objective of promoting and fostering Australian Rules on the Gold Coast, Southport Sharks signed an 10-year Patron Partnership with the Gold Coast Suns in 2009.

We entered the NEAFL in 2011, and in 2018 we won the NEAFL Premiership. In 2020, we introduced our senior women’s team and carried on the tradition of winning the Premiership in our first year of the competition and went on to win a back-to-back flag the following year.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the NEAFL competition was abandoned and eventually amalgamated with the VFL, with Southport being one of the six NEAFL clubs joining in 2021. After the pandemic once again cut the season short, we finished second on the ladder in our first year and were Runners Up in 2022, in an exciting Grand Final played in Melbourne.

In 2020, we introduced a senior women’s team. For our first two years of existence, we played in QFAW Division 1 and won premierships in both years. In 2022, we were promoted to the QAFLW, which is the state league for women’s football in Queensland.
